Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium
From Mag to Web
AUGUST 2006
Pro-social content:
Several cuts humbly regret past decisions or rely on friends. On "She Looks to Me" lead singer Anthony Kiedis feels led by God to help a drugged-out girl. "If" is a romantic ballad. A line on "Make You Feel Better" alludes to prayer. A marriage proposal recognizes that couples "are as one" ("Hard to Concentrate"). Relationships require patience and hard work ("C'mon Girl"). A hard-living, bank-robbing woman suffers the consequences of that lifestyle on "Dani California," however ...
Objectionable content:
Some will view the title character as a folk hero rather than a moral tragedy. Sexual shenanigans appear on "Hump De Bump," "She's Only 18," "Storm in a Teacup" and "So Much I." Racy metaphors are also an issue. A guy chases down sexual prey on "Charlie," which includes a mild profanity. Partying is therapeutic ("Turn It Again"), which isn't inherently problematic unless it includes alcohol or drugs, which get a subtle nod on "Warlocks."
Summary advisory:
Kiedis' lyrics are mostly indecipherable nonsense, a blitzed stream of consciousness filtered through a rhyming dictionary. Kiedis told Rolling Stone he feels "blessed to be in a position to transmit light to people all over the world with music." Any light on Stadium Arcadium is dimmed by references to sex and drugs. Teens looking for light will find the real thing in John 8:12.
Red Hot Chili Peppers By the Way
From Mag to Web
Pro-social content:
"Throw Away Your Television" encourages fans to slay this "contagious plague" in the interest of creativity and personal ambition. Isolated lines offer friendship and tell others to strive for uniqueness ("I Could Die for You," "Can’t Stop"). The singer expresses love for his rare "Venice Queen."
Objectionable content:
Ambiguity rules, though it’s fairly obvious the guys have sex on their minds on "Warm Tape," "Cabron" and "I Could Die for You." More explicit is "Don’t Forget Me," which also finds lead singer and known substance abuser Anthony Kiedis stating, "I’m a meth lab . . . an inbred and a pothead." Other drug references appear on "This Is the Place" and "Universally Speaking." Among several profanities is a use of the f-word. Spiritual counterfeits derail "The Zephyr Song" (talk of a fortune teller), "On Mercury" (mention of "another stubborn Scorpio") and "Midnight" (nods to astrology and Eastern meditation).
Summary advisory:
By the Way is a rudderless lyrical hodgepodge. Aside from one song that puts TV in its place, the band thrashes about in disjointed fascinations loosely connected to their next fix—be it sexual or drug-induced.
Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication
From Mag to Web
Pro-social content:
The title song reveals an unglamorous side of Hollywood stardom. "This Velvet Glove" concludes, "It's such a waste to be wasted."
Objectionable content:
Obscure ramblings stray out of bounds. Several cuts refer to giving people "the finger." The metaphysically confused "Parallel Universe" uses Christ's name inappropriately. Lead singer Anthony Kiedis refers to California women as "muthaf---ing girls" ("Around the World"), invites someone to cuss him out ("Emit Remmus"), speaks of slitting his own throat and having sex with a movie star ("Otherside"), and gives a nod to reincarnation ("Right on Time"). The suggestive "I Like Dirt" appears to describe oral sex. Vulgarity, profanity and disrespect for police make "Get on Top" a lyrical bottom feeder. Though vague, "Savior" could be interpreted as blasphemous for questioning Jesus' divine nature.
Summary advisory:
This unfocused stream of consciousness contains a lot of neutral material. Even a few positives. However, trashy language, sexual imagery and anti-Christian sentiment drown out any redemptive pondering. Don't let teens plan a trip through Californication.
